Reflections

Throughout this whole module and doing this project, I’ve learnt that statistics is indeed very effective and efficient for data collection, organization and the interpretation of data.  Although trying to understand the contents in the manual for the SPSS software is much of a hassle and time consuming, you get your results really quick at the end of it. It will really serve its purpose for FYP project next year. Also, I’ve learnt that factors like the equipment to use, the way we measure and the participants chosen contributes to our accuracy and reliability of our data
The main problem we encountered was trying to find the right topic to start on. It was difficult in obtaining data for certain topics that we came up with but all of us were always open to new ideas and kept on racking our brains for new ones until we were satisfied with this current topic that we are working on. It is based on good teamwork and effort coming from everyone and I'm glad my group has completed this journey getting to know one another much better.

At the start, our group faced many difficulties deciding on a final topic to do our Statistics project on. Many ideas were thrown in, only to be striked off as they were not feasible, and we were all quite frustrated about that. But we finally managed to come to a common consensus for our topic, and after that, things went much more smoothly. Having to juggle with our other projects & preparing for our exams at the same time, I must say that it wasn't at all easy to plan, execute the data collection, and summarising them into this blog.

We might still be quite amateurish in this module, but overall, I've learnt the importance of using statistics and knowing how to interpret statistics data in our profession, which emphasises heavily on evidence-based practice, hence requiring us to read journal articles extensively. Having a good knowledge and understanding about statistical procedures will then facilitate our learning.

I had to keep referring to my course manual when learning how to use the SPSS program, be it for our ICA or for this project. Now, I've more or less gotten the hang of using it, and I'm sure it'll come in handy for future projects such as FYP next year. I've also got to know my group mates better, had fun collecting the data, learnt more about Leonardo Da Vinci's hypothesis, and all in all, it was an interesting experience. :)

The Statistics module in general has been a good learning experience. Our group started off with difficulty in deciding on our project topic. We spent a considerable amount of time brainstorming on various ideas, and evaluating the feasibility and practicality of each idea. But when we eventually settled on our topic, things got going, and we could finally get started on the whole process of collecting data up to analysing the data and finally setting up the blog.

It was difficult getting used to using the SPSS program initially, and we kept having to refer to the manual in order to do our analysis of data. But once we got the hang of it, its usefulness to us in future for our final year project became quite apparent, and we started to appreciate this module more. SPSS definitely helps us to save time when doing data analysis!

An important lesson that I learnt from this project is the importance of planning. Data collection seemed relatively easy, after we had decided on our research topic. But as we discussed, it was clear that there were many factors that had to be considered, like standardizing the way we measure both Arm Span and Height, how many decimal places we need to record our results in, etc. Without careful planning, our data analysis would have been much less efficient, and our results would also be inaccurate!

This project has been a good learning experience for me. Through this statistics project, I must sincerely agree that I’ve learnt a lot such as organizing, summarizing & interpreting information as well as analyzing data and many more. I believe that all these are essential skills that would be of good use to me during my FYP next year.

Furthermore, I have to say that this project was indeed a challenging one for us. We had to go through a lot of obstacles along the way and work things out before proceeding on. We also tried our best to ensure that everything went on smooth by preparing ourselves beforehand. For instance, we ensured that the measuring tapes were placed as accurately as possible before calling in the participants for our project. This was to ensure that everything would go on well without any form of mess. Moreover, we cautiously recorded the readings to prevent any possible parallax errors that could be made.

I strongly believe that the project itself has allowed me to be able to use the SPSS more effectively and confidently. Also, I would like express that I really appreciate the step-by-step guided statistics book provided as it has been of good use to us.

Lastly, I would like to say that I’ve learnt a lot and enjoyed myself working with my group mates to do up this project. Although the journey was one that was filled with obstacles, the learning experience gained was certainly a valuable one.

From this project, I’ve gained two learning points.
One, I’ve learnt the importance of Statistics in research work – how statistics make research meaningful by equipping us with analytic skills so that we can interpret our findings and make sense of the data. The analytic and interpretation skills that we’ve gained from this module are lifelong skills that we can use not only while we are studying, but also when we work in future. Moreover, the knowledge on how to use the SPSS program through this module has somewhat sped up the statistical procedures after we’ve familiarized ourselves with the program. This, I feel, will help to save time in our future research work which will inevitably require data analysis.
Two, I’ve learnt the importance of teamwork in projects. In order to ensure the smooth operation of projects, everyone has to play his or her part well and contribute equally. Only with responsible group mates who work together with open minds and open hearts, projects can be run smoothly.
All in all, I feel that this module is a prelude to our FYP in Year 3.
